Amazon listing optimization checklist: 23 points we audit

The exact checklist we run on every listing before advertising starts: indexing, title, bullets, backend terms, images, A+, attributes, reviews and compliance.

Advertising a listing that converts below its category average is the most expensive mistake on Amazon. Every click costs the same whether the page sells or not. This is the checklist we run before we scale a single campaign. Two groups: indexing (can the product appear for the search) and conversion (does the visitor buy).

Indexing

  1. Target keyword list exists with search volume and relevance scores, researched in the marketplace's language.
  2. Primary keywords appear in the title, readably, in the first 80 characters.
  3. Secondary keywords appear in bullets, each bullet leading with a benefit.
  4. Backend search terms use the byte limit fully, contain no words already in the title, no competitor brand names, no commas needed.
  5. Structured attributes (material, size, colour, compatible devices, scent, count) are filled; they drive filters and search.
  6. Browse node is the most specific correct one; wrong nodes hide products from category searches.
  7. Indexing check done: search the ASIN plus each target keyword; non-indexed terms get moved or added.
  8. Variation family is correct: one parent, all children, consistent naming, no orphan listings competing with each other.

Conversion: the search results page

  1. Main image is the product on pure white, filling 85% of the frame, sharp at thumbnail size; tested against alternatives.
  2. Title reads as a product name, not a keyword list; shoppers decide on it in the results.
  3. Price position against the top five competitors is known and justified.
  4. Review count and rating are at or above the category median; if not, Vine or review requests run before advertising.
  5. Prime badge and delivery promise show; FBA or Seller Fulfilled Prime is in place.
  6. Coupon or deal badge exists where competitors use them.

Conversion: the product page

  1. Image gallery covers size and scale, use in context, close-ups, packaging and a text-overlay infographic of key benefits; video in slot seven or earlier.
  2. Bullets answer the five objections buyers raise in reviews of competing products.
  3. A+ Content includes a comparison chart across your range and modules that handle objections; Premium A+ if eligible.
  4. Brand Store link leads somewhere useful.
  5. Questions and answers section has answers to the common questions; unanswered questions cost sales.
  6. Negative reviews have been read; recurring complaints are fixed in the product or addressed in copy.

Compliance and operations

  1. Claims are lawful in the marketplace (health, best-in-class, clinically proven differ by country).
  2. Regulatory data is present: GPSR responsible person in the EU, warning labels, energy labels, ingredients.
  3. Stock cover is above four weeks on every ASIN that will be advertised.

How to use it

Run the checklist per ASIN, fix the fails in order of traffic, then advertise. Expect conversion rate to move 20 to 40 percent on listings that fail more than five points. That is the same ACoS improvement as cutting bids by a quarter, without losing a single sale.
